1997-05-27Another Spitfire joins the restoration queue

On the 19th of May Spitfire Mk 22, PK624, was wheeled out of storage and established on the restoration side of the TFC T2 hangar. Once the tail has been removed from the fusleage, the intention is to paint strip the interesting bits of the aeroplane in house, and when she has given up all the hidden serial, codes, roundels and other markings, she will be sent away for proper full paint stripping to be completed.

Internally, the aeroplane is a skeleton, with the cockpit area having been almost completely stripped. Rudder pedals and two flight instruments are all that remain, apart from the two magneto switches, which were left in the 'ON' position.

We'll be adding a history of this aeroplane to these pages just as soon as we can find it, but if any one out there has got photos of the aircraft during her periods of service, guardianship or storage, or any details of her operation then we would very much appreciate seeing them. We'll keep you posted on progress here. Incidentally, the incorrect serial PK264 was found to be pencilled on the inside of the radio hatch.
