| 1998-07-30 | Moose oil problem is fixed |
We reported in an earlier Happenings page that the P-51D Mustang Moose had spent the May Spitfire Show at Duxford on the ground after a couple of aborted display slots. The problem had been the amount of oil that the aeroplane was throwing over the side. After a good hard looking at in the Hangar, the problem was discovered to be a defective seal on the fuel injection pump making it a fuel and oil mix which had been blowing off all over the engine, and overboard. Rectification work was completed in short order and the machine was test flown twice without any problems. Further checks were carried out, but no further damage to the engine or any related gear was found. The Mustang has been operating normally since that time, a great relief to the ground crew who have got used to clearing the aircraft down after each flight. | |
