North American P-51D-20NA Mustang "Twilight Tear"
G-CBNM 44-63864 122-31590

Hubert Bill Davis

P-51D-20-NA, Construction Number 122-31590, USAAF 44-63864 was built at North American Aviations Inglewood factory in a production batch of 1000 airplanes comprising serial numbers 44-63160/64159. She was delivered to the 78th Fighter Group (FG) based at Duxford, England on the 14 December 1944, and subsequently allocated to the 83rd Fighter Squadron (FS)as HL-W. the aircraft was the mount of one Lt. Hubert "Bill" Davis and renamed "Twighlight Tear". Lt. Davis had received a private education in England prior to the outbreak of war and by war end had been credited with four confirmed aerial kills.

By June of 1949 "Twighlight Tear" along with a number of other surplus P-51D airplanes had been exported to the Royal Swedish Air Force (RSwAF). Now designated J26 (Jaktplan or Fighter 26) 44-63864 became Fv26158, coded rD, gK and was subsequently transferred to 'Flygflotti' F16 at Uppsala in Sweden.

In February 1953 the RSwAF aircraft where disposed of to Israel IDFAF, and Fv26158 was allocated the identity of IDFAF 3506(38). Little is known of the aircraft service history with the IDFAF, but by 1978 the airplane was reported in open storage at Herzalia, Israel. The aircraft was acquired largely complete by Col. Itzahki (IAF) after the aircraft had been de-listed by the IAF and sold for scrap. Over a period of nearly six years Col. Itzahki with meagre resources restored the aircraft to flying condition culminating in its first post restoration flight with new civil identification of 4X-AIM from Herzalia on 5 February 1984.

In 1986 4X-AIM was acquired by FlygExpo, Sweden and was ferried from Israel to Malmo arriving on 23 December where she was operated until her subsequent sale to The Fighter Collection in April 2002. "Twighlight Tear" has now come 'full circle' and returned to the same airfield she left some 54 years ago.

The long term plan is to carry out an in depth restoration to return her to wartime configuration ,however for the time being, the airframe is being reconditioned so we can fly her during the coming season. A repaint is being planned, and through friends in the USA we have been fortunate in contacting 'Bill' Davis's family and we hope to present a more detailed account of her life in a further update.
