The brands \u2018Get Organised\u2019 philosophy aligns well with our own which when coupled with the overall quality of the hand tools made the decision straightforward. The tool kit affords us greater flexibility with how we can best utilise the time our volunteers give us whilst still retaining positive control of the tools in use.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div id=\"x-legacy-panel-2\" class=\"x-tab-pane\"  aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"x-legacy-tab-2\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggleable=\"x-legacy-tab-2\">With the Corsair\u2019s return from its brief leave of absence in the South of France (Nimes) the season is all but at a close. (excuse\u00a0 for in air\u00a0 video of Corsair)<div  class=\"x-video embed\" ><div class=\"x-video-inner\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/140762068\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<p>A quick review of the aircraft records (thanks to Greg) reveals that we flew 223 individual sorties or 116 flying hours over the course of the season. From a mechanical stand point all but a handful have behaved impeccably (aeroplanes that his not pilots) and we begin now to make conserving the aircraft for the winter layup our priority. A number of the engines have already been inhibited and you know winter is around the corner when the hangar heating is re-commissioned..!!! Not only does it make good sense to keep the engineers and volunteers warm (they move faster when they\u2019re warm) but the temperature in the hangar helps mitigate the risk of deterioration due to damp conditions and prevent the onset of corrosion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14721 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4454\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_4454.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hangar will soon adopt its winter look with aeroplanes in various states of strip down and whilst it may look to the casual observer that not much changes in a given week or month a significant amount is going on behind the scenes procuring parts and spares, manufacturing replacement components, researching design data and drawings and even developing repair schemes for parts no longer supported. Our volunteers will be busy supporting all of these activities not to mention removing a pseudo modern interpretation of an instrument panel from the FG-1D Corsair, and fitting a fully restored original instrument panel with period instrumentation.<\/div><div id=\"x-legacy-panel-3\" class=\"x-tab-pane\"  aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"x-legacy-tab-3\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggleable=\"x-legacy-tab-3\">We have already begun to look at some of the more time consuming maintenance tasks such as an oil leak we encountered on the V1650-7 engine fitted to Miss Velma; currently the heads and banks are removed to allow replacement of elastomeric and rubber components that seal the cylinder block to the crankcase.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14809\" src=\"http:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/E64C9858-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"E64C9858\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/E64C9858-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/E64C9858.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/E64C9858-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/E64C9858-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Replacement parts are on order with Aviation Jersey and once they have been received the blocks can be made ready for re-fitting. The task of fitting a block is made ever more difficult by virtue of the inclination of the block to the crankcase on an installed engine. In the factory the engine was mounted in a rotating stand which allowed it to be inclined so that the crankcase studs were upright and the block its self could be lowered vertically onto the engine. Many hands make light work so they say and in this instance that\u2019s exactly what you need; multiple pairs of hands to help lower the block on the two block jacks, multiple hands to hold the six pistons true to the cylinder bore and a goodly number of pairs of eyes to make sure that the block is lowered evenly and no rings get broken in the process. We anticipate having the blocks back on in the next week with hopefully an engine run to verify the \u2018fix\u2019 before the end of the month.<\/div><div id=\"x-legacy-panel-4\" class=\"x-tab-pane\"  aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"x-legacy-tab-4\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggleable=\"x-legacy-tab-4\">The Gladiator has been moved back into its winter spot in the hangar with the intention of finalising the wing gun installation and installing the Dunlop isolating valves for the fuselage guns which were missing from the lower instrument panel. Unfortunately these valves were missing from the aeroplane as it was originally received and even though we have looked far and wide for replacements (to no avail). The Gladiator made an historical return to France this year with G-GLAD making its debut at La Ferte Alais Airshow in May. Now this might need checking by the historians amongst you but this may have been the first time a Gladiator has been back to France since May of 1940 when 615 Squadron (who had been fighting in France since September 1939) had begun to be re-equipped with the Hawker Hurricane from April of that year. From all accounts Nick (Grey) made a splendid job of showing off the aeroplane at its very best&#8230;!<\/div><div id=\"x-legacy-panel-5\" class=\"x-tab-pane\"  aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"x-legacy-tab-5\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggleable=\"x-legacy-tab-5\">The arrival of the Curtiss P-36 from our contractor in the USA California Aero-Fab and its participation at Flying Legends marks the start of our certification process for the UK regulatory body. The inspection has begun already with a systematic desktop review of the documentation, drawings and release notes supplied by our contractor pertaining to the restoration of the airframe and associated systems and will continue in the coming weeks with the physical aspect of the inspection. With no OEM drawing to refer to a new CAD drawing was needed to allow us to manufacture new parts. The forged parts have draft angles on all sides and elevations to permit the forging to be ejected from the die or hammer after being struck; drawing the complexities of those shapes in 2D was going to be a challenge (least while it was for the author) and after several iterations it became clear the only way to be sure of attaining the correct shape and form was to model the levers in a 3D CAD program. (Here it\u2019s worthwhile pointing out that at any time during this process we could have simplified the shape of the lever and modified the cross shaft to suit, but were possible and attainable we stick with the OEM design).<\/p>\n<p>Our original 2D drawing was taken by our new \u2018best friend\u2019 Rob Littlewood at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leada.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">LEADA Ltd<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14737\" src=\"http:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/newcrosshaft.jpg\" alt=\"newcrosshaft\" width=\"757\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/newcrosshaft.jpg 757w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/newcrosshaft-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fighter-collection.com\/cft\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/newcrosshaft-100x69.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 757px) 100vw, 757px\" \/>\u00a0 (who\u2019s crayons are much sharper than ours) from which he produced a 3D model of the finished lever(s).
